With Hibernate5, how to get the connection provider handle and subsequently the datasource in the code? SessionFactoryImpl had a getConnectionProvider() which is removed. The intention is to register the dropwizard metric to the datasource.

It sounds like you need FlexyPool. That's exactly what FlexyPool does, and it does even more than monitoring. It allows you to figure out the right pool size dynamically.
