I'm new to Hibernate though not to programming or even to downloading sourceforge tools on the web, but I cannot figure out whether a Hibernate download is different from a Hibernate Search download. If I go to links for the Hibernate page, I get a zip file that appears to be for Hibernate Search, and I don't know if Hibernate is included in that or not, or whether they come separately, or what.

People new to the site could use some high-level explanations of the different things they're expected to know, like whether Search is a different project, whether hibernate-tools is a separate download, etc.

Hi,
the reference site with "intro" explanations is hibernate.org

On sourceforge we highlight the latest updated module, which might be the "main" module or not.

Hibernate Search specifically is a set of extensions to Hibernate ORM to allow more powerful queries compared to what SQL usually provides.
The package also includes the required ORM libraries from the Hibernate core project.

Thanks for the info.

The "downloads" page on hibernate.org has one link for "release bundles", and it links to sourceforge. I eventually did find a 3.6.10 release through google, but I was surprised it wasn't easy to find off hibernate.org.

I still think there is (plenty of) room for explanations of basic workings for people new to the technology; I went through the "Getting Started Guide" (its download link is also sourceforge), and it it is missing some basic information. For instance, it tells a little about the configuration file, but does not tell where it is supposed to be - root, classpath, specific class directory? There a number of such holes in the docs; I put it down to the author not thinking sufficiently about what a reader may not know already.

Perhaps if I ever do get it figured out I'll write a Getting Started page myself and submit it to the community.

thanks, good points.

Where you able to find the quick start guide?

Yes, thanks -- that's the one titled "Getting Started Guide" that I mentioned. "Hibernate Getting Started Guide" is its page title.
