 Post subject: Basic hibernate question - Updates instead of inserting

When i issue a persist command JPA/Hibernate seems to be updating the record instead of inserting a new one. What could be causing this?

Also, when i delete the rows from the database manually, Hibernate restores them. What causes this?

Please ignore the first question as i found out that the test case i was running was truncating the data first. :(
