For using Tomcat JDBC Connection Pool
http://people.apache.org/~fhanik/jdbc-pool/jdbc-pool.html as alternative to c3po or proxool connection pool,
also outside tomcat,
you can use following ConnectionProvider implementation (written for Hibernate version 4):
Code:
package org.hibernate.connection;
import java.lang.management.ManagementFactory;
import java.lang.reflect.Method;
import java.sql.Connection;
import java.sql.SQLException;
import java.util.Iterator;
import java.util.Map;
import java.util.Properties;
import javax.management.MBeanServer;
import javax.management.ObjectName;
import org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.DataSource;
import org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.PoolConfiguration;
import org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.PoolProperties;
import org.hibernate.HibernateException;
import org.hibernate.cfg.Environment;
import org.hibernate.service.jdbc.connections.internal.ConnectionProviderInitiator;
import org.hibernate.service.jdbc.connections.spi.ConnectionProvider;
import org.hibernate.service.spi.Configurable;
import org.slf4j.Logger;
import org.slf4j.LoggerFactory;
/**
* <p>A connection provider that uses the Tomcat JDBC connection pool outside Tomcat container</p>
*
* <p>To use this connection provider set:<br>
* <code>hibernate.connection.provider_class org.hibernate.connection.TomcatJDBCConnectionProvider</code></p>
*
* <pre>Supported Hibernate properties:
* hibernate.connection.driver_class
* hibernate.connection.url
* hibernate.connection.username
* hibernate.connection.password
* hibernate.connection.isolation
* hibernate.connection.autocommit
* hibernate.connection.pool_size
* hibernate.connection (JDBC driver properties)</pre>
* <br>
*
* N.B.: All Tomcat JDBC connection pool properties are also supported by using the hibernate.tomcatJdbcPool prefix.
