 Post subject: Entity aware events

I need to let my entity know that it's about to be saved in such a way that it can manipulate it's own state and have those changes persisted. I've experimented with the nhibernate event and interceptor systems and I either get some sort of exception or the changes aren't persisted. What's the correct way to go about doing this?
