We have a full text search using Lucene across multiple fields. Now they want partial searches to be supported for some of the fields. For example, searching for "choc cake" should include records which have terms starting with "choc" and "cake". I know that Lucene supports this if we use wild card searches such as "choc*", but this behavior needs to be supported by default. I can think of the following options.

1. Split the words in the quick search string and concatenate a "*" at the end of each word
2. Search for exact matches first and if no results are returned then go for option 1.

Please suggest what the best approach would be for this problem.

I would go directly for 1. It's fast and easy to implement.
