Hi

I am just starting with Hibernate Search.

My application comprises of items / products that are offered as part of rewards catalogs for a credit card.

As such it has attribute like item code, item description and some range field like active dates period etc


I do have the book Hibernate Search in Action as a valuable resource - unfortunately I do not have the time to read all of right now as my first step is to create a prototype to bid on a RFP.


I came across this site http://opl.bibliocommons.com/search
and I found it very impressive.

My question is can Hibernate Search along with the other technologies that I chose namely Seam, Hibernate, Richfaces allow me to create such a dynamic interface ?

Looking for some guidance here.

of course you can; I've worked on an enterprise application built upon Search, Seam, Richfaces exactly "about books"; that was 2 years ago, all this technologies are much improved now.
What is so special about the site at the link you posted?

I checked out your library site, it has a very simple search interface (no disrespect here) and it works as expected, did a few searches on some popular authors.

What I liked about the site I pointed out was it allowed a user to build a query on their own using a combination of boolean conditions.

In my application the requirements are similar. For instance, a complex search condition could be -
find all items in catalog "A" whose cash value is between $100 and $200 AND which are visible only between 1/1/2009 and 1/31/2009
As you can see there are 2 conditions here and it could also have been an "OR" in another use case.

I did not want to get the carriage before the horse, so I am just seeking inputs from more experienced users before I promise something that I cannot deliver :(

I can't show you the backoffice, which is way more powerful but requires deep bibliotechonomy (not sure about the english) knowledge: those guys working at the catalogue need very powerful tools and are quity picky about how they want to define the queries; I think I've seen the most complex cases.

Some forms of search expect different fields and are combined in a single search but other definitely let the user search for whatever they want writing boolean conditions, weight modifiers, sorting in free-form; Search also supports the "return by relevance" but this got disabled in the library system for some weird business requirement.

Yes, I missed the advanced search page. I wish I knew Italian :)

I was preparing a response for a bid on a project that would have complex search abilities, so I did not have all the time to read the book. Thanks for your initial guidance.
