Hi,
when using the index in ram you'll loose it at any application reboot, you probably don't want that.
It could be faster, but good modern OSes just can buffer efficiently and transparently give you about the same performance if you flush correctly.
Also consider that FS buffers are managed by your clever os, and he can swap or flush them when needed, when using JVM ram you have to ensure you're not going to kill your app for low mem problems.
On windows RAM is a bit faster, so good for development (if you don't mind loosing it each time); on linux I never saw a difference.
