"An overlapping category is when an entity instance may be in two or more subtypes. An example would be a person who works for a university could also be a student at that same university."
Does anybody know how to implement this situation with JPA (Hibernate's implementation)?

depend on how you would model in it java (hint: multiple inheritance nor type-change is possible in Java)
