Dear all,

I have encountered the exception java.lang.IllegalStateException: No transaction while I try to perform the commit.

My box has the following setup
JBoss 4.05 GA
Hibernate 3.2 GA
Postgres DB 8.0

The following is the actual exception stack trace i got:

For the process of my operation flow, I have one stateless session bean with BMT that will invoke a handler to insert some info.

The handler will get the SessionFactory through JNDI lookup(I setup the SessionFactory for lookup using MBean). In the handler,it dun have any transaction demarcation code. All it do is just get the current session and perform the create, update operation.

After return from the handler, the session bean will perform either commit or rollback (invoking userTransaction) depending whether the handler execute successfully.

The snippet of the session bean(as indicate in the stack trace AuditTrailManagerBean) is as followed:

Hi niefeng1983,
what is happening is that your line:
Code:
      //fail at this point while commit
      _sessionCtx.getUserTransaction().commit();

is creating a new transaction! You should use the same transaction that you begin.
Try using the following:

UserTransaction transaction = _sessionCtx.getUserTransaction().begin();
...
transaction.commit();

Thanks for your reply Xserty.

I have changed the code as you point out, but i still face the same problem.

I found out that as long as I have the underlying DB problem (in this case, I have a NOT-null constraint in one of my field), then I will encountered such an error. If the handler can execute successfully, the code can commit as normal.

The stacktrace you provided

...

clearly pointed out the transaction issue I (hopefully) solved for you.
Once that had been solved, you were able to see the NOT-null constraint issue, but still requires you to use the same transaction as mentioned in my post.
