Can someone please explain what the return value of IsUnsaved supposed to be?

It returns "object".

From some java examples, I think it means:

true -> tells NH to do an insert
false -> tells NH to do an update
null -> use default ("is-unsaved" value)

But this is just a guess... Can someone please explain what the return values are supposed to be? Is this documented anywhere?

You guessed right. It is documented in the API documentation for the method.
