After reading some documentation I'm quite sure I need the @Filter to parse collections. It seems that this is an extension to the JPA architecture. Is there a way to achieve the same result (loading just some elements of a given relation) using just JPA?

My main concern is that even though we are currently developing with Hibernate as our JPA provider we may need to switch to Kodo anytime, as the final production server could be Weblogic.
