Can HQL cope with this:
SELECT IsNull(m.myFld,0) as myAlias
FROM myTable m

This works without the IsNull:
SELECT m.myFld FROM myTable m

It's choking on the IsNull, saying it's not a valid mapping, but I thought that HQL could cope with these!! The IsNull works fine in a WHERE clause, though.

AFAIK its a limitation with HQL - it only accepts functions with one argument.
