I tried to migrate my hibernate 3.1 app to 3.1.3 but then my HibernateFilter enters an infinite loop.

The app is based on the open session in view pattern using application transaction, implemented with a ServletFilter.

This is the Filter code:

Code:
    public void doFilter(ServletRequest request, ServletResponse response,
    FilterChain chain)
    throws IOException, ServletException {
        // Try to get a Hibernate Session from the HttpSession
        HttpSession userSession = ((HttpServletRequest)request).getSession();
        synchronized(userSession) {
            Session hibernateSession = (Session) userSession.getAttribute("HibernateSession");
            // reconnect it to the current thread
            if (hibernateSession != null) {
                HibernateUtil.reconnect(hibernateSession);
            }
            try {
                chain.doFilter(request, response);
                HibernateUtil.commitTransaction();
            }
       catch(ServletException se) {
      HibernateUtil.rollbackTransaction();
      se.getRootCause().printStackTrace(System.out);
       }
            catch(Throwable t) {
      t.printStackTrace(System.out);
                HibernateUtil.rollbackTransaction();
            }
            finally {
                // disconnect the session
                hibernateSession = HibernateUtil.disconnectSession();
                // and store it in the user's HttpSession
                if (hibernateSession != null) {
                    try {
                        userSession.setAttribute("HibernateSession",  hibernateSession);
                    }
                    catch(IllegalStateException ignored) {
                    }
                }
            }
        }
    }

The HibernateUtil (based on the book):

Code:
package rechtschnell.business.persistence;

import org.hibernate.*;
import org.hibernate.cfg.Configuration;
import org.apache.commons.logging.*;
import rechtschnell.business.exceptions.InfrastructureException;

import javax.naming.*;
import java.util.*;

/**
* Basic Hibernate helper class, handles SessionFactory, Session and Transaction.
* <p>
* Uses a static initializer for the initial SessionFactory creation
* and holds Session and Transactions in thread local variables. All
* exceptions are wrapped in an unchecked InfrastructureException.

Thanks for your pointers, I already was browsing the code of the CaveatEmptor demo.

So, if i understood the example, I have to substitute the "old"
HibernateUtil methods from your book: newApplicationTx() and commitApplicationTx() by methods that set the session mark END_OF_CONVERSATION_FLAG ?

Code:
        public static void newApplicationTx() {
            log.debug("New Application Transaction");
            commitTransaction();
            closeSession();
        }

        public static void commitApplicationTx() {
            log.debug("Committing application transaction");
            Session session = getSession();
            try {
                //commitTransaction();
                session.flush();
            } catch (HibernateException ex) {
                    throw new InfrastructureException(ex);
            }
        }

That seams ok, as a matter of fact, it is more a web-tier concern.

By the way, when can we buy the second edition of Hibernate in Action (I suppose all this would be explained there in detail)?

Axel
