Hi,

I am new to the Hibernate world. I am currently reading Hibernate in Action, which is for Hibernate 2.0.

I came checking the website to download the source code for the example aplication and found out that Hibernate 3.1 has been released!

No Problem :) The book said that this could happen. However I have a question. Is it safe to develop application with Hibernate 3.1 since this has just been released, or is best to stuck to the old 2.0 untill 3.1 is stable.

I am asking this because I went to check the migration notes. Here I found how to migrate from 2.0 to 3.0. But from 3.0 to 3.1 it says that it is still in progress!

regards,

Hibernate 3.1 is the current release for production code. The book is about Hibernate 2.1, by the way. If you keep your eyes open and use the Hibernate 3.1 reference documentation tutorial to make your first steps (and then switch to the book), you shouldn't have any problems.

Where does the migration guide say that Hibernate 3.1 is "in progress"?

I went to the migration guide over here: http://www.hibernate.org/250.html. In the section Hibernate 3.1, at the end, I found TBC which I concluded is short for To Be Continue, right? In my comments I was not refering to hibernate but to the migration documentation.

I already have the book for 2.1 (Just both it :) Since I am still new I was going to try first scratch myself with this, altough keeping an eye on the new fetures relaeased by the 3.1, altough do not know if this is a good idea!?

I may have not said this in my first post. I only recently started checking out ORM tools like Hibernate. I find it very intresting, however do not have any practical knowledge about it so far, so that is why I am wondering on whether there is a big gap between 2.1 and 3.1

From the Migration Document I could understand that there was no big jump from 2.1 to 3.0. However the Migration Document for 3.1 are labeled as "many new featurs". That is from where my questions are comming.

It's natural that we will continue extending the migration document as more people upgrade.

Furthermore, there are quite substantial differences (and 2 years) between Hibernate 2.x and 3.x. You should read chapter 1 in the book, and then chapter 1 in the Hibernate 3.1 reference documentation. Skip chapter 2 of the book.

First of all thanks for the help :) I really apreciate it :)

Already read Chapter 2. The problem (sort of speak) is that book is really easy to read and in a day already arrived in chapter 3 (which for someone like me it is saying much :) Altoug it has simple examples it is still nice to know them :)

Ok, downloaded the reference right now and going to read chapter one, and then continue from the book :)

Thanks again for the help :)
