I'm new to Hibernate, so I'll ask:

Can I use Hibernate 3.1 to develop desktop applications?

Yes. Assuming your desktop application needs access to a database.

Sorry about the sarcasm before...

Just a note: I have read a few posts before, at least one by Gavin, which recommended using long-running Hibernate Sessions in desktop applications.

This is in place of the ThreadLocal pattern that you will see quite frequently discussed here for web applications.

The assumption here is that the entire application is on the desktop and not on a backend server somewhere.

This is my case. The entire application is on the desktop.

Hibernate is designed for multiuser, server side applications, it costs and startup time can be a problem for your use case, test it.
