Can I declare an attribute of a POJO object to be persisted as transient? We have a Clob attribute in the object and that gets stored in a session with clustered environment. Since Clob does not implement Serializable, we get an error. So I was wondering whether I can declare the Clob as transient? Just want to make sure that it has no impact on Hibernate persisting the Clob or reading the Clob.

In HB3, a Clob property mapped as type="clob" is actually serializable (though it still cannot be accessed outside the txn). (Hibernate serializes an empty wrapper.) In other cases, declaring the field as transient is dangerous if you try to saveOrUpdate() or merge().
