Have a question for the Hibernate team:

What are the probabilities of a change/update/deprecation in the HBM file format? We are deciding on generating some app specific files on-the-fly based on the HBM.xml files, and may develop a package to read the HBM.xml file for getting the object information (including the table name, primary key info etc. for the mapped object). Is this advisable? We would stay away from this idea if Hibernate does not have a plan to standardize the HBM.xml schema.

Extremely unlikely.

Certainly not until another major version, more likely two major versions.

consider using the hibernate 3 tools for doing this .....

hibernate already contains code that can read hbm.xml and provide you with a foundation for this.

Its called the Configuration.
