I notice the <meta> information in mapping file
(I gen'd it with middlegen) gets written as comment
in Java code. This looks specific to hibernate.
Is there a way I could put a general comment
in the mapping file as meta data and have
it written to Java source file?

What? Just insert meta=xxx-description in your mapping, it gets written to the javadoc. See http://www.hibernate.org/hib_docs/reference/en/html/toolsetguide.html#toolsetguide-s2-2
