I have a record in the system that can be NULL and has a currently value of 3 (lets say). The value is changed (in the bean) to NULL representing that the value no longer exists. When I call my update function, the field is not updated to the NULL value, but rather keeps the existing value.

Is it possible to change this implementation?

This is an error in your code. Please provide the information required to trace your problem, i.e.: mapping file, problem source code, generated sql and debug ... These are REQUIRED items when posting.
