Does Hibernate require that there be concrete classes? From what I can see, there seems to be quite a bit of the framework that depends on reflection. We are trying to write out application in such a way as not to depend on using concrete classes. Instead we are planning on using something like a Map for each object.

Can you provide any more details about this, point me to JIRA tasks, parts of the code, etc? Any help would be appreciated.

What is the state of Hibernate3? Is it in beta?

Never mind, I wrote before I looked. I saw the RoadMap description for Hibernate3.
