Does the statement "Collections may not contain other collections" http://www.hibernate.org/hib_docs/refer ... persistent mean that Hibernate cannot directly manage a map of lists?

i.e.

List l = (List) customer.getMap().get("HOBBIES");

What are some alternatives? Should I get the map to "return" a Long representing a list id, and then load that?

Long id = (Long) customer.getMap().get("HOBBIES");
HibernateList hl = (HibernateList) session.load(HibernateList.class, id);
List l = hl.getList();
