 Post subject: many to one with a twist

I have a many to one mapping with a twist. On the many side I want to store a property of the object in the one side and not the whole object reference. The object on the one side is read only and I have cascade=null. Is there any mapping trick that will allow me to do this. If not do I have to use life cycle callback or interceptor?
