I'm working on the architecture of a large client/server application.
Motivated by very high performance requirements we come to the conclusion that the result of hot database queries have to be cached on the client side.

On the client side the query statement is assembled and passed to a local cache management system. If requested info is not in the local cache, then the query is passed to the server-side part of the application and the actual database query is executed.

What can be the contribution of Hibernate to such an approach ?

Hibernate can use a second level cache of objects and a query cache.
