The objects I'd like to persist are not Javabeans, but rather XML instances. I'd like to map them (piece by piece) to database tables. I would also like to create XML instances from database tables (the reverse).

Is it possible to do this with Hibernate?

No - at least not easily. Consider using a XML-RDBMS mapper like XQuark Bridge http://xquark.objectweb.org/index.html
