If hibernate.max_fetch_depth = N, will Hibernate lazy load whatever is not joined in the first round?

This is important so we can eval runtime speed/memory characteristics.

Only if the "whatever" is mapped as lazy="true" or proxy="....."

So lets say "whatever" is not marked lazy. And, by definition, it's not joined...

So it's not reachable, or do you do something other than joining? Do I get a nullpointer back?
