q = q.setString(query);
List list = q.list();

i can get the count by list.size()

but this will reduce the peformance some big

How can i get the result count without list all the items?

just like taking this sql: select count(id) from CAT where id>5; in jdbc?

Also, just to clarify:


You've already called list() on the query which preloads the results. So calling list.size() at that point is not that big of a deal.
