Hello. I want to start using Hibernate 3, but it seems that the hibernate-tools is still at 2.x, as a separate download. I peeked inside hibernate-3.0alpha.jar, and saw that the hbm2ddl tool has moved into there. That's fantastic, as I didn't like having to have the main hibernate jar, then the tools one separately. However, it doesn't look like hbm2java is in hibernate-3.0alpha.jar. Was that an oversight (update/export made it, but not hbm2java)? If it is going to remain separate, can hibernate-tools be added to maven's repository at ibiblio?

Thanks,
David

hbm2dll have always been part of the core.

hbm2java et.al. will in the nearest future become in-sync with the featureset of H3.

hbm2java in the v21branch should be able to run on most h3 mappings, but i can't promise anything as it have not been tested - and it will not be able to generate proper src for the new features of H3 -not until later ...

Regarding Maven - I/we don't use maven, so i don't even know where and why.....(do maven still just get a .jar file and not all other relevant parts from a project?)

Thanks for the quick reply; I appreciate your time/help.
I have a few more questions, though:

1) Why have one tool in core, and the others in a separate download? hibernate-tools.jar is only ~122k, which is so small; it would be really nice if everything was available in one jar. I'm guessing it's for a separation between runtime code + runtime tools, and non-runtime tools - but the separate tools are so small why does it matter to separate them? Does anyone else agree with me?

2) Is there an ETA for the other tools to catch up to 3.0? I just want to figure it into my shedule for when I can hope to start using them.

3) Maven wants a jar file and a POM (Project Object Model - project.xml file), though all that is really required is the jar file. Since 3.0alpha is already up on Maven@ibiblio (their public repository), somebody must have been responsible for contributing it ( http://www.ibiblio.org/maven/hibernate/ ). Here's the Maven contribution page: http://maven.apache.org/repository-upload.html

Thanks again,
David

Hibernate 3.x or any of the 3.x tools won't be usable in production before Q2/2005, but it's probably OK to start development in Q1.

And all of the tools will be completely revised as well as the packaging. We already have a road map, it just has to be cleaned up and posted (on my desk...).

Wow; that was fast! I'm really looking forward to an updated roadmap. Thank you Christian and Max.
