I'm currently importing a very large data set into my index, and I need to allow searching on whatever has currently been added to the index. Is there a way to search on the index while the index is being updated? Right now search seems to stop altogether on these large updates.

Yes it is possible to search on the index while it's being updated, but it will slow down the queries. What do you mean by stop altogether exactly?
