I see this comment in the Hibernate Annotations source (class AnnotationBinder):

Does this mean using EJB3 XML as an input instead of annotated Java code? If so, this is exactly what I need. My team is building a custom solution to map annotations from EJB3 XML to Hibernate, but it would be great if we could just use HA.

I'd gladly contribute some substantial code towards this goal, if this is a goal of the project.
