Is there any way to do a theta-style outer join in Hibernate 3? Hibernate gives “org.hibernate.HibernateException: Errors in named queries:”

Below is the basic idea of the 2 tables I'm trying to join. They're not directly related so I can't just walk the object graph from member to portrait.

from Member as m, Portrait p
where
m.id left outer join p.memberId
