Is it possible to configure all nodes with hibernate.search.worker.backend=jgroupsMaster and have each node update their own index files?

No. And I don't quite see what usecase you want to solve with that. If every node is it's own master why bother with a master/slave setup? Just use a FSDirectoryProvider.

Thanks for the confirmation Hardy.

I'm trying to avoid having to use NFS or rsync to share index files. I'm looking at Infinispan now.

That's a good idea; in fact the next version of Hibernate Search should include support for Infinispan, but it's easy to integrate even now. Some users did it already.
