Section 4.1.3, pg 148, bullet on Life cycle dependencies says that there is no notion of composition in java. Member inner classes have composition semantics (instance of inner class cannot exist without containing instance). Although it seems it's not really useful for hibernate (not supported for mapping unless static nested class).
