I've updated my Jira issue (http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HBX-1110) with a new patch.

I've totally rewritten it to take the approach that Max originally suggested. Also, the code is better. The old patch needs to be ignored. (I wouldn't mind an administrator to delete/hide it to avoid confusion)
