Is there any Hibernate tool that will take an existing 2.1 mapping file and upgrade it to a 3.x version and check to ensure that it is 3.x compliant?

On a similiar note, is there any tools support to convert these into the Annotation based version of the Java code?

Run SED or similar tool and change the xml doc reference approrpiately. Then use a XML validation step to check for compliance. In the majority of cases it wil be fine. The primary issue that you will fine is that the defaults for lazy has changed.
