Am I correct that in order to take advantage of Ehcache, you only need to add <cache usage="read-write" /> to the mapping file? I have a ehcache.xml in my classpath, the above line in my mapping files, and get no errors when I start the app, but I'm not sure how to actually see if it's working.

Thanks. This is with Hibernate 2.1.6

Yes. Appropriate logging settings should show cache activity

Just to make sure there is information in the manual:
http://www.hibernate.org/hib_docs/reference/en/html/performance.html#performance-cache
