 Post subject: Criteria with and/or clause from a variable

Hi, without using an if else statement, can anyone tell me if its possible to construct either an 'and' or an 'or' restriction based on a variable (which will contain a string containing an and or an or)

PS. I'm actually using grails but still can use pure java..
