 Post subject: Cascade persist but then ignore updates?

Is it possible to configure Hibernate to persist the target of a @ManyToOne relationship -- but only if it has not been persisted already? The goal is to get rid of unnecessary UPDATE statements (as these objects are never changed once they are created).
