 Post subject: Validate with no annotations? (only with hbm)

Hello,
I'm using hibernate 3, without annotations, using hbm xml files, how can I validate an object before insert or update or validating in any part of code, using the properties (like not-null or maxlenght etc.) inside the hbm files? is it possible only with annotations?
