 Post subject: EntityMode.DOM4J only works when every column selected?

I am trying to retrieve XML from a database using EntityMode.DOM4J. When my query starts with "from ...", I get back XML data as Element objects. When my query starts with "select a, b, c from ...", I get back non-XML data as Object objects.

Is there any way to get back XML from a result set that only includes a subset of the columns in a mapped class?
