Is it not possible to do this with a superclass containing the mapping?

I have some classes setup like:

http://tadtech.blogspot.com/2007/09/hib ... -many.html

except the ManyToOne association is in a superclass and I get a org.hibernate.AnnotationException: mappedBy reference an unknown target entity property error.

I found this blog entry that talks about it:

http://clarkupdike.blogspot.com/2007/01 ... class.html

Is that really the case? If so, why?
