 Post subject: Optimistic lock without version element

I am keen to understand the behaviour of Hibernate when the following attributes are set, but NO version element has been created.

For example;

<class table='XXX' select-before-update='false' optimistic-lock='version' dynamic-update='true' polymorphism='implicit' mutable='true' name='XXX' discriminator-value='1514'>
...
</class>
