 Post subject: multi-column userType - getting column numbers

What is the correct approach to doing this?

in the 'nullSafeSet method, I don't want to just guess the column numbers - this would be extremely fragile. I'm not sure how applicable the 'index' value is.
I cant use the preparedStatement/resultSet/resultSetMetadata - the result-set is null.
