 Post subject: Preventing unique constraint violation

I want to persist an object with a name property that has a unique constraint.

I can check first whether an object with that name already exists, but
how can I make sure that in the time between the check and the persist call
another object has been committed with the same name?

Must I use serializable isolation or is there a better way?
