Can JBoss Cache's REPL_SYNC mode be used with query caching?

The reason I ask is that Gavin added the following comment to o.h.c.UpdateTimestampsCache.preinvalidate as part of svn revision 6079:

//note that it needs to be async replication, never local or sync
updateTimestamps.put( spaces[i], ts );

I already know that I can't use invalidation with query caching, but is synchronous replication out as well?
