getting total numOfRecords in Hibernate Search w/paging data

What is the best way to get the total number of hits using Hibernate search api w/lucene when trying to page data...query.setFirstResult(), query.setMaxResults(),

There is a ( (FullTextQueryImpl) query).resulSize();
It is not offcially part of the API though and it should be considered as an approximative number (a bit like google).
