 Post subject: hql group by clause help needed

i am trying to use "group by" in a new way and don't understand why it doesnot work for me. can somebody help me on this one?
this one works
select atable.aforeignkey.id
from atable atable
group by atable.aforeignkey.id

this one works too
select atable.aforeignkey
from atable atable

why this one doesnot?
select atable.aforeignkey
from atable atable
group by atable.aforeignkey
