Hibernate version:3.1

Name and version of the database you are using:mysql
I utilize hibernate for the db's access.
I would to utilize som filters(where )but i' think that hibernate is no made to execute a lot of db access.
the my answer is:
in the business is better filter the collection of bean created by hibernate select(without where) or re execute a new query with the were statement?
an if is better filter the collection , how?
