I use Tomcat 5.5, MySQL 4.1, MySQL Connector/J driver 3.1.11, Spring and DBCP (version 1.2.1) as dataSource in my web application. After Tomcat startup applications works quite smoothly but after some period slowdown and even hang up problem is observed.

Here is my applicationContext.xml dataSource configuration:

Quote:
<bean id="dataSource" class="org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource">
<property name="driverClassName"><value>${jdbc.driverClassName}</value></property>
<property name="url"><value>${jdbc.url}</value></property>
<property name="username"><value>${jdbc.username}</value></property>
<property name="password"><value>${jdbc.password}</value></property>
</bean>

Here is a stack trace fragment generated when application hang up observed:

It is very interesting that after some experiments with DBCP parameters I have figured out the configuration when the problem seems to be fixed:

Quote:
<bean id="dataSource" class="org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource">
<property name="driverClassName"><value>${jdbc.driverClassName}</value></property>
<property name="url"><value>${jdbc.url}</value></property>
<property name="username"><value>${jdbc.username}</value></property>
<property name="password"><value>${jdbc.password}</value></property>

<property name="numTestsPerEvictionRun"><value>-1</value></property>
<property name="timeBetweenEvictionRunsMillis"><value>60000</value></property>
<property name="minEvictableIdleTimeMillis"><value>60000</value></property>
</bean>

Problem also not observed if I do not use DBCP.

Please could anybody explain me the situation and propose me possible rock solid solution. Application traffic is very pore couple of requests per minute
