how can we refresh the cache manually?

If you mean, how do you put new values into the cache, check out http://ehcache.sourceforge.net/ for info. If you mean that you want hibernate to go back to the DB to update all values currently in the cache, you can't. The closest you can get is to call session.refresh(ent).
